How the fictional search behaves
Imagine a glossary with a query field, a short status message, and a list of definitions. A reader types “club card”. The page keeps focus in the query field and updates a separate message: “3 definitions found.” Assistive technology can announce that count when the message is marked as a programmatically determinable status. The three result entries remain available below, but the reader is not forced to start reading them immediately.
Count announcement versus result reading
The announcement answers one narrow question: how many matching entries are available? It does not automatically read all three definitions. The reader may continue typing, review the list when ready, or use the normal reading and navigation commands to inspect an entry. In this hypothetical example, moving focus to the first definition just to announce the count would mix two different tasks and could interrupt the search.
The result list itself is content, not the status message. The count, a waiting update, or a short error update can be treated as status information when its meaning is available to assistive technology without requiring focus to move. What “no results” means here
If the fictional search announces “0 definitions found”, that means no entry matches the current query within this fictional glossary list.
